The water had begun to gather in mass amounts at their feet, and in this moment was impenetrable, as a solid granite slab would be in the middle of the desert: untouched. Snow covered shoes from the weather outside, chill in his fingers, and maroon in his cheeks showed his recent entrance through the same door that stood motionless in this split second.
He stood, removing his gloves, his fingers half in their cylindrical safe houses from the cold, and halfway to the freedom of the warmth of indoors. His other hand gripping slightly the tips of the fingers of the opposite glove: stuck in a pose of tugging stress. His left foot poised to come down swiftly to relieve itself of the blanket of white, and his leg caught in a perpetual motion of bent inflexibility.
The door was cracked slightly, and the cold air blowing through, the tiny room would be dipping down to freezing temperature if it were not for the heat of the inside. The door, shut most of the time except the occasional disturbance of entrance by a tenant, was frozen in this moment along with the two who were staring at each other.
In her soft cotton pajama pants, she stood just two feet from him waiting for him to finish and meet her where she stood. The cartoon ducks on her pants were growing impatient and quacking to show their ability to add to the scenery of a situation. Her gray sweatshirt, that was covering her pink t-shirt, was crinkled under the slight weight of her arms in a crossed position that gave her some warmth in the midst of the cold room.
But her eyes were remarkable for their way of defying the surroundings and staying focused on his own eyes. Wide open and aware of everything, her eyes would be considered average by a passerby; however, the warmth coming from her eyes could heat the world.
Motionless in this instant, fixed in their respective duties, and longing for the heat of a kiss, their eyes met and in a moment there was nothing else. The world had come down around them, but there was connection. There was love. There was infatuation. There was longing. There was yearning. There was light. There was recognition. There was Romance. There was tomorrow.
In the physics of a moment, love had broken down to its simplest form: Understanding.
